Learning lyrics is invaluable to retaining the form and overall shape of a song.Willie Nelson will release a new Frank Sinatra tribute album, That’s Life, on Feb. YOUNG SINATRA ALBUM COVER ARTWORK FULLAgain, this album is full of songs you should know, and that you’ll definitely need to know as a Jazz drummer, and this is the best way to learn them. Further demonstrating a reserved, clean, but swinging style, these drummers swing this album possibly even harder than Songs for Swingin’ Lovers (up for debate). On this album, you can hear:Ī Swingin’ Affair was released in 1957, a year after Songs for Swingin’ Lovers above, and once again feature the wonderful drumming of Alvin Stoller and Irv Cottler. I believe the only song that I’ve never played live from this album is “Swingin’ Down the Lane”, and I wish I could, because it swings hard! Alvin Stoller and Irv Cottler are the two drummers on this album, and they truly demonstrate how much a big band can swing while the drummer keeps a beautiful boiling, but reserved energy. Arranged by Nelson Riddle, this album is full of songs you should know as a Jazz drummer. The album was recorded in 1956 in what I feel is the height of Sinatra’s singing career. The switches from brushes to sticks are incredibly flawless, and every fill, however sparse, is perfectly placed. Songs for Swingin’ Lovers is probably my favorite Sinatra album, because it has the cleanest, most perfect studio Jazz big band drumming out there. I Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You.Additionally, most of these songs are great songs to know as a Jazz musician, and the best place to learn them is from the source. It’s something I often feel that drummers neglect, but ballad playing is extremely important. This album is a great example of playing a ballad, but driving the time in the context of a large, 70 piece orchestra. Tracks 12-15 were arranged by Nelson Riddle, and you can hear a distinct difference between Riddle’s arranging and Jenkins’ arranging. The original record included tracks 1-11, stopping after “None But the Lonely Heart”. This album is exclusively ballads, and you can hear Bill Richmond, Nick Fatool, Alvin Stoller, and Irv Cottler on this album. It is one of the saddest album I’ve ever heard, and one of the most beautiful. No One Cares is a 1959 Sinatra album with Gordon Jenkins as arranger. While Sinatra’s voice, sense of swing, and emotion were all contributing factor to his music, we have to remember that his music was truly a success thanks to the arrangers, and musicians who made the music with him. While I do agree that he is in a different category, or medium as singers such as Billie Holiday, or Ella Fitzgerald, he is still my favorite Jazz singer, and I have no problem saying so. They see him as a crooner that didn’t sing true, pure “Jazz”. He has sold over 150 million records (continuing), and starred in many films and musical films such as The Manchurian Candidate, Guys and Dolls, High Society, and many more.ĭue to his massive popularity, I often feel like Jazz musicians tend to discount his impact, or singing ability. Born in 1915, in New Jersey, Sinatra started his career singing with bandleaders such as Tommy Dorsey and Harry James, and eventually found massive success as a solo artist. Frank Sinatra is one of the most, if not the most popular vocalist to ever sing.
